The highest mountain in Ecuador, the Chimborazo, measures 6310 m. Originally it was a volcano which last erupted about 1500 years ago. Thus it is officially inactive. For the indigenous population living in the vicinity; Mount Chimborazo is sacred. Nonetheless, the ascent is permitted. On January 4th, 1880 a British-Italian roped party were the first to reach the summit. The Chimborazo is a part of Ecuador’s national coat of arms.
