The Red Apollo (Parnassius apollo) is a European
highly endangered and strictly protected butterfly from the
Family of the swallowtail butterfly (Papilionidae). The genus name is derived from the
Mount Parnassus in central Greece. The red Apollo was in 1995 in Germany pet of the year.
